Letterman Jacket High School Resource in Q&A
Is it OK to wear a high school letterman jacket with only the letter on it in college? I have a letterman jacket, but all it has on it is the letter from the school I graduated high school from. There's no graduation year, no activities, nothing tacky. Just the letter. Is this okay to wear during the winter months of school? I wouldn't think so since the jacket could be viewed as for anything and not just high school. What are your thoughts, everybody?

caroline g replied: "it doesnt matter what's on it- you'd be a super dork if you wore it. It doesn't matter what is or isn't on it. You will look like an idiot"

Nikki replied: "No one ever did that at my college - that would have been considered nerdy beyond belief...unless you were doing it to be ironic, then it would be really amusing."

jamesfolk77 replied: "seems ok because it dosn't have your old hs logo and stuff on it."

jjc927 replied: "I don't see the problem. All it is is a winter jacket from your high school."

jay replied: "sure but thats lame come on they going to think ur in high school for even wearing it."

Ryan replied: "most of the time no one wears theirs. urs sounds really boring anyway. i dont think i would wear mine"

whitney replied: "I dont see why it would matter..I wore my high school tees from senior year and clubs I was in when I went to class. Others I saw did too. Wear what you want, its your jacket, you earned it...I dont think its tacky or rude at all. Also, who cares what people think...chances are you wouldnt be running around a college campus several days a week if you were still in high school, Im not a dork or loser or any of that and neither were the people I saw wearing high school shirts at class. In my opinion its no different from wearing a church shirt to school, or those shirts that everyone wore that said "college" across the front when they werent in college, or some other lame screen tee that has a tacky ass saying on it like "To my girlfriends, may they never meet" and has two mugs on it or "My mind left, I went to find it" or this beauty "Best Jugs in Town" with milk on it....your jacket is NEVER going to be that tacky anywhere that you wear it."

yogamouse replied: "if you like it, wear it. who cares what anyone else thinks."

A.Mal.E. replied: "It all depends on your attitude. If you're wearing it as a bragging piece then no, it aint cool and you need to put it away now, If you're wearing it cuz thats the jacket you have thats the warmest then cool, I know the importance that a Letterman gets in High School but that was High School and you aint there no more. You in college now, so act accordingly. I recommend putting away that part of you life and facing college head on and open minded."

DaChickenLady replied: "OK. Your question and some of the responses make me feel old, for the first time, on YA. I am 41. I feel out of touch now with some in your generation because I honestly don't understand why it would NOT be OK to wear the jacket. You have earned that jacket, no? Your accomplishment and pride of accomplishment don't just suddenly disappear because you are no longer in high school, do they? Why would it be dorky to wear the jacket? If anything, I think it would be more dorky to not wear a perfectly good jacket because you were worried if others would think you were dorky for wearing one. Some grown men, in their 30s and 40s, wear their college class rings. Some retired pro athletes wear their championship rings. What's the difference? If it's the letter that bugs you, remove the letter. There's certainly a long tradition of people doing that."

Richard B replied: "Well, dude, it's a jacket, so I think it'd be OK to wear it. If people ask what the letter's about you can tell them of all your outstanding high school accomplishments. It's OK to brag sometimes."

What do you do with an old high school Letterman jacket? I'm looking to part with my high school Letterman jacket...it just sits in the closet collecting dust and taking up space...if you've gotten rid of yours...did you donate it back to the school? Give it to Goodwill?

Kate. replied: "idk maybe donate it to the school for someone who cant afford the actual jacket- obviously they can provide their own letters/grad year, etc."

Ral Castro replied: "sure"

Vikings replied: "Blow the Dean of students."

justin a replied: "i agree that blowing the dean is your best chance"

Billy replied: "im gonna go ahead and agree with the last two answers."

How do you get an academic patch for your high school letterman jacket? Is it a certain GPA for a certain amount of time or something? What GPA and for how many quarters...semesters..years...etc...?

Bob replied: "Yes."

What verse from the Bible should I put on the back of my letterman jacket for high school? I'm only 15 years old and in 9th grade and I want to put a verse that I will not regret putting on the back of my jacket under my last name. I want to be able to wear my jacket with pride in my senior year. I play Varsity Volleyball and Basketball and Track so I'm a sports freak. Please help me find the perfect verse! Thank you.

plutomomma replied: "Phillipians 3:14 I press toward the goal for the prize of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus."

Brian Sanders replied: "Mark 10:27 King James Version For with God all things are possible"

anobium625 replied: "Philippians is the best place to look. Another verse, besides the one already given, is: "I can do all things through Christ which strengtheneth me. Phil. 4:13."

Kerry replied: "1 Corinthians 9: 24 24 Know ye not that they which run in a race run all, but one receiveth the prize? So run, that ye may obtain."

alfire66 replied: "Philippians 4:13; I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me. Or possibly a different version of this same verse that you like. But hey good for you to put a verse on your jacket. I'm very proud for you to evangelize like this...Keep it up!"

Can I put two different High School letters in a letterman jacket? I was studing in a American High School in Germany and I bought the High School Jacket, now I just move to the state and got a letter from the High School I am currently attending and I want to now if I can put that letter on my jacket, because I dont feel like buying another expensive jacket

steelersbabe02 replied: "i would say that's kinda disrespectful of both schools. the one in germany and U.S. but if you don't care then it shouldn't be a big deal. =]]"

What quote/saying should I put on the back of my high school letterman jacket!?!? something like "carpe diem" or "bow down to the king" nothing too common like those though the quote will go underneath my name

Logan replied: ""Winner winner, chicken dinner!""

Can you get a letterman jacket in high school if you dont play a sport..?? i want to get a letterman jacket but i dont play a sport.. would i be able to get one or is it just stupid to even try to get one...

boomer replied: "yeah you can always buy one you just won't get a letter...lots of people at my school had the jacket before they had the letter"

Mis replied: "Yes you can. You can letter in almost any elective...Theatre, Choir, Atheletic Training etc. Or you can go to an Athletic Supply store and buy one. It's not a big deal, you just won't have the patches on the sleeves."

Diamond in the Rough replied: "No...the purpose is sports activities....they don't hand out the letter unless you on a school team. I guess things have changed............lol"

OkieBoy replied: "I'd say sure, it shows school spirit! Course I went to school a long time ago but recall several people getting them and didn't play a sport. Don't forget if your doing other activities as well. Drama club, math club, debate team, school newspaper, so I say go for it!"

polarbaby replied: "all you have to do is go to your local sports shop that the school buys them from and buy it. Anyone can go in and buy one...it doesn't matter if you play sports or not....you are showing your school spirit by wearing the jacket!!!!!"

jmol72001 replied: "letterman jackets are for people that represent the high school in some type of way or form...what did you do just go to class and you want a jacket..mmm im not sure if you can just buy one...try...why not.."

poppet replied: "Anyone can buy the coat, but you have to "earn" the letter by participation in Sports, Band, Theater, Academics, etc."

Sweetz replied: "You could get one but what would be the point of getting it if you didn't play a sport?"

SexyAmby replied: "yea of course you can you can always get a letter in an extracurricular activity like band or maybe a letter in honor society"

nickkap1 replied: "sure you can buy one. Go to a nieghbodhood Wal-Mart. They sell them there. Just like you can by a class ring for a school you never went to. They are nothing special. They do not mean anything. The "letter" itself is handed out by the school. The giant letter on the jacket is given to people asociated with the school sport."

ninja cat replied: "I would say no, you are kinda making an anti establishment statement if you buy one without earning the letter, if that is who you are then go for it, but otherwise I would say better hold off. You could always date someone with one and ware his..."
